Group Volunteers:

Helping Hands welcomes volunteer groups of all ages to help us save lives of cats and dogs in our community! Each year, volunteer groups spend hundreds of hours helping to set up our events, walk dogs and supervise cats and kittens. We have even had a few leave the event with a new furry friend in tow! If you are looking for a fun and engaging opportunity for community service- look no further!

We are so grateful to all our Guest Groups; past, present and future for all they have done to assist in a successful year filled with new beginnings for so many homeless animals. For 2016 we are projected to beat last years’ adoption numbers and successfully re-home 1,000+ pets- all thanks to volunteers like you. Fall 2016 volunteer sign up dates are now available if your group wanted to help make this fall even bigger!

We have many available dates, two day adoptions events and set up dates. You can pick however many fit with your groups needs. Please choose dates with your groups needs in mind as cancellations have a big impact on our success. We filled up for the fall semester pretty quickly- so please send an email today at to secure your groups spot!

Need to know information for Group Volunteers:

Adoptions are located at the PetSmart in Butler Plaza, off Archer Road by Best Buy and Trader Joe’s, our organization is inside by the dog training area.

For adoption events (on Saturday and occasionally Sunday) we split the groups up into two shifts- 10:30-2pm and 2-6pm. Every Friday we have set up from 5-7pm and can provide additional event orientation to volunteers who will also be at the adoption event.

Each shift can accommodate no more than 6 volunteers.

Our only requirement for volunteering is a drive to help find our animals great homes! If there are cat/dog allergies we can have you assist adopters without handling the animals. Training on our policies and procedures is provided to each volunteer at the start of their shift. Closed toes shoes and long pants (puppies have pretty sharp nails!) are recommended but not required of you don’t mind a few scratches! Our Volunteer Manual is available on our website, if you have any additional questions about our organization.

Group Volunteer FAQ:

~My group is interested in volunteering! How can we get started?

Great news! Please send us an email at to select your dates!

~What hours will my group be volunteering?

Adoption Events run from 11am-5pm. Since this can be a long day- we break up the event into two shifts- 10am-2pm and 2pm-6pm. The first shift helps set up for the event and assist potential adopters. The second shift assist potential adopters and helps break down the event.

~How many volunteers can I bring?

Our Adoption Events can be busy- but space is limited- so we request that each shift has no more than 6 volunteers. The day is broken up into two shifts- 10:00-2pm and 2pm-6pm so each event can accommodate a total of 12 Group Volunteers.

~Something came up on the date my group is signed up for, what should I do?

We request that we are notified at least one week in advance if you are unable to make it to an adoption event. Last minute cancellations have a big impact on our regular volunteers, adoptable pets and the overall success of our event so please email us as soon as possible.

~Where is the adoption event?

Our Adoption Event is located at the PetSmart off Archer Road in Butler Plaza near the Best Buy, Trader Joe’s and Ross. We are located inside PetSmart behind the dog training area (halfway through the store and to the left). Occasionally we will be located outside under a tent in the parking lot for our PetSmart National Adoption Days. Our Volunteer Coordinator will let you know if you are volunteering on one of these days!

~Is there a sign up sheet?

Yes! Please ensure that your group has signed in, and signs out at the end of their shift to get credit for your time. The sign in/sign out sheet is located on a wooden rolling cart. We use this to confirm total volunteer hours for your group.

~What should my group wear?

Taking dogs for walks, setting up and breaking down the adoption event all require closed toe shoes (sneakers are best!). Long pants are strongly recommended as excited dogs can jump up and scratch even the best dog walker.

~What will my group be doing?

The 10am-2pm will help set up crates and tables for our adoption event and help walk in our adoptable dogs and puppies. The 2-6pm shift will help walk out any dogs and puppies not adopted and helps to break down at the end of the adoption event.

During the adoption event, volunteers will be broken up into three groups of two: Dog Walkers, Puppy Patrol and Cat Helpers. Our Dog Walkers bring each dog for quick walk twice during their shift and provide them with water. Our Puppy Patrol Volunteers help to make sure our puppies are being handled safely and that everyone who comes in contact with them sanitizes their hands before and after. Our Cat Helpers make sure that our adoptable cats and kittens are being handled gently and safely.

All volunteers are expected to help assist potential adopters find their perfect match!

~Are we required to attend an Orientation?

Volunteer Leads are available to answer any questions during our adoption event and provide an orientation of our policies and procedures at the start of each shift.

~Are groups only able to volunteer at adoption events?

We encourage our groups to think outside of the box when it comes to volunteering! While most groups opt to help us at our events- we have had some amazing groups who weren’t able to commit to Saturdays help in fundraising events to help fund our mission. Idea’s have included Supply Drives, Bake Sales and even a Trivia night! If your group is interested in helping in fundraising please send us an email at to get started!

If your group has any questions not addressed- please email us at!
